Frequently Asked Questions
What different types of flooring can you get?
Solid - floors which have the specific wood for the whole thickness of
the floor. These are normally fixed to the sub-floor.
Semi-Solid - floors which have a very thick layer of the specific wood
on top of a less expensive wood.
Engineered - floating hardwood floors made up of 3 layers: a hardwood
veneer (14 or 15 mm); a core layer and a stabilising base layer.
What do I do if I have an unlevel concrete subfloor?
We can level your concrete floor by using a self levelling compound.
Can I have a wood floor in the kitchen and which one?
Yes, you can have hardwood floor in the kitchen, you can use both solid
or engineered.
I would like to have a new floor in the kitchen but I am also changing a
kitchen which one should I do first?
We recommend that the floor is fitted first, otherwise removing white
goods (washing machine, fridge etc...) for service or repair would be
problematic.
Can I have a wood floor in the conservatory?
Yes, engineered floors are best suited to conservatories because of
their stability.
Can I have a wood floor on top of underfloor heating?
Yes and because of their stability, engineered floors are recommended.
Is a wood floor cold?
Wood is a great insulator; a wooden floor will feel warm in winter and
cool in summer.
I am worried about getting dog scratches on my hardwood floor.
Dog’s claws will scratch the lacquer on your floor. However, if you
choose an oiled finish the scratches will not show up.
Can I have wood floor in the flat? I am worried about my
neighbours!
Yes you can have wooden floors in your flat, but remember to use an
approved acoustic underlay.
Can I have my stairs done in wood floor?
Yes you can. We have matching wooden nosing’s (stair edges) for all of
our floors.
Do wood floors change colour?
They will change colour over time, but its all part of the natural aging
of your hardwood floor.
How long will my floor last?
With the right care and attention, a quality hardwood floor will last
for hundreds of years.
Do I need to acclimatise my floor before it is fitted?
Engineered floors don’t need to acclimatise and in fact once a pack is
opened the floor must be fitted. A solid floor will need a minimum of
two weeks to acclimatise.
How Many Times Can The Floor Be Refinished?
Products have improved and many manufacturers have increased the "wear
layer" thickness on their goods, particularly Chinese imports. In other
words they can be refinished more than once. A close side view check of
the product you may be looking at will provide a visual of how much
veneer is on the surface.
Do Solid wood floors increase the value of your home?
Solid wood floors, just like ceramics are recognised as a high quality
building material. They are long lasting and completely renewable with
very little effort. Aside from these benefits solid wood floors are
fashionable, minimalist and above all, desirable which means that they
increase the value of your home.
Skirting’s and Architraves
Real wood skirting’s and architraves are a perfect complement to your
floor. The skirting’s come in sizes from 95mm upwards however the
architrave can also be used as skirting when a small skirting is
required. Likewise the skirting can be used when you need a larger
architrave than the standard size supplied. You would need to check that
the skirting is not reversible if using it for architrave otherwise the
reverse side will be visible.
