Prep Work:

We ask that you remove all small items of furniture, such as lamps, plants and pictures. Our installers will move any big items. These items will be put back once the installation is completed.

Our installers will then uplift the existing floor if necessary. Anything that is uplifted will be disposed of by us, unless instructed otherwise by the client. They may also put down an underlay over your existing floor if we are fitting on top of it. There are many different types of underlay and the one that will be best for your job, will be decided on prior to installation. In the case where we uplift the existing floor and find unsuspected damp or any other type of problem, we will address it immediately, and a decision will be reached on what the best plan of action is to deal with the problem.

This is where we will do any leveling or packing if needed. We also take a hygrometer reading, to see if conditions are suitable to fit. If you are having engineered wood, it can be fitted straight away; however solid wood will require 14 days to acclimatize.

Installation:

Normally we would just run the boards through the doorway and continue into the adjacent room, but this all depends on the type of property. We will start at one end of the room and leave a 1/2inch gap around the entire perimeter to allow for expansion. We will carefully select several of the straightest boards for the first pieces. Once they have been nailed in place, the fitter will go back and nail the same boards through the tongue, predrilling and nailing at an angle. After the third row or so is in place they will use a Manual or Pneumatic floor nailer.

A floor nail or cleat should be set into each floor joist, assuming 16" spacing and an additional nail between each set. This should result in a spacing of every 8" to 10" as recommended by the National Flooring Association. Each board must have a minimum of two nails each. No two boards will end in the same place. The fitter will alter lengths, to stager joints 6" apart. Often the last row will not fit a full strip of flooring. The fitter will cut the flooring width enough to be able to hand nail the last row, leaving enough space that when all is said and done there remains a 1/2" expansion space between the wall and the wood.

Once we have fitted your new floor, we will clean up any mess made by our installation team and take any rubbish that we have created, away with us. We will also vacuum and wash your new floor.

All of our fitters use tools from Festool, who specialize in floor installation tools.

We hope that you enjoy your new hardwood floor and remind you that maintenance to your floor is minimal. When required you can clean your floor using warm water, a mild detergent and a well rung out mop. For a superior finish, we recommend specilised floor cleaning products that can be added to the water. You can also vacuum your floor whenever it needs it.
